Frequently Asked Questions

What are your enrollment deadlines?

Bachman Academy has "rolling admissions." We admit students throughout the school year. Refer to our Admissions Process for more information.

What is your student profile? Who is the typical Bachman student?

We accept national and international students who have been diagnosed with language-based learning differences and/or Attention/Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The typical diagnoses of the students we serve are ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder, Visual Processing Disorder, and Nonverbal Learning Disorder.

Bachman Academy generally does not accept students with behavioral disorders that are not a direct result of their learning difference.

What is a learning difference?

Learning difference “is a general term that refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities. These disorders are intrinsic to the individual, presumed to be due to central nervous system dysfunction, and may occur across the life span. Problems in self-regulatory behaviors, social perception, and social interaction may exist with learning disabilities but do not by themselves constitute a learning disability. Although learning disabilities may occur concomitantly with other handicapping conditions (for example, sensory impairment, mental retardation, serious emotional disturbance), or with extrinsic influences (such as cultural differences, insufficient or inappropriate instruction), they are not the result of those conditions or influences.” From the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities

Is learning difference the same as learning disability?

At Bachman Academy, the term learning differences is synonymous with learning disabilities [see Learning Disabilities: Issues on Definition (1990) defined by the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities]. Learning disorder is another synonymous term used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV).

We prefer to use the term learning difference, because students who process information differently are able to learn, especially when given the proper tools and instruction. Often it is those very differences that give them an edge to succeed. Check out this list of successful people with learning differences.

What courses do you offer?

Bachman Academy’s core curriculum adheres to and exceeds the credit requirements for graduation as set forth by the State of Tennessee. The State of Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) requires 22 credits for graduation, which is comprised of Math (4 credits), Science (3), English (4), Social Studies (3), Physical Education and Wellness (1.5), Personal Finance (.5), Foreign Language (2), Fine Arts (1), and Electives (3). Our students may graduate with 22 credits, as required by the TDOE; however, our four-year students can earn more than 22 credits by graduation.* Our high school diploma (for both college and career path) is recognized by the State of Tennessee.

The two pathways for Bachman high school students are Career Education and College Preparatory. Each pathway is designed to lead students toward further education upon graduation. The College Preparatory pathway prepares students for a two–year community college or four-year Liberal Arts college or university. The Career Education path (equine science, horticulture, mechanics, or woodworking) prepares students for a certification program, independent living experience, technical school, or two-year community college.

*See Diploma Credit Requirements for example of two different graduation plans.

What supervision do the students receive after school? What do the students do at the end of the school day and week-ends?

Bachman dorm parents are responsible for the supervision of the students during non-academic hours.

After school during the week, students spend about an hour at the local YMCA where they have the opportunity to play racquetball, tennis, or basketball, or participate in one of the many other types of exercise available there. After supper, students have free time.

There are several recreational opportunities each weekend, some off campus and some on campus. Typical activities include visiting local attractions like the Cleveland Greenway, Coolidge Park, the Ocoee River; visiting local historical sites; hiking; intramural sports; planned outings like going to the Lookouts baseball games or other sporting events; or going to the movies or the mall.

Is there someone to guide them to do laundry?

Our dorm parents use a life skills curriculum that teaches students to manage chores like laundry, as well as money management, and how to handle every day social situations.

The students are able to put these skills into practice frequently. They earn allowance money each week by keeping a certain level of consistency and quality with their chores. They also have outings and shopping trips, which require them to manage their money and allow them to practice social skills in public situations.
