John Pitner is a Chattanooga native. After high school, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for six years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In 1983, during his time in the Marine Corps, John served in
Lebanon.

Upon returning to civilian life, he took a position with the Chattanooga Humane Educational Society where he was promoted to a Cruelty Investigator and promoted again to Supervisor of Animal Control. During this time, he held Police Officer certification for both the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County.

After nine years, John left the Animal Control field to open his own photography business that led to extensive travel throughout the United States. In 2000, he took a position with the Catoosa County Animal Shelter as the Executive
Director.
Most recently, John married the love of his life, Katharine Marie Dean, in May of 2004. Last June they purchased their home in Rossville, Georgia, where they live with John’s oldest son and Kathy’s two children. John’s younger son visits most weekends. The family has two dogs, an old English bulldog named “Bu,” and a mixed breed they rescued from the Bradley County Animal Shelter named “Holly.” They also have three cats.
